People can spend so much time thinking about the colour, or the style, of a tile that one of the most important aspects can often be overlooked… size.
And that’s a shame, because the dimensions of a tile can radically alter the whole appearance of a room.
In recent years, we’ve seen a definite trend towards larger format tiles. These grand porcelain slabs exude elegance, transforming the spaces they occupy into modern, must-see masterpieces.
Larger tiles can trick the eye into thinking a room is bigger than it actually is; ideal if you are wanting to enhance an already substantial space, or make a small space feel larger.
From a practical point of view, a larger profile also means fewer grout lines, allowing for a clean, sleek look, with the added bonus of less maintenance.
Large format is an Atlas Concorde forte. Their Boost collection grows in grandeur the grander you go, creating stark urban statements in restaurants, hotels and houses.
Technological advancements have meant large format porcelain tiles are now more widely available, but that’s not to say there still isn’t room for a smaller alternative.
One of the disadvantages levelled against ‘tinier’ tiles is the fact that they can make a room look too busy.
Smaller rooms sometimes also require a more deft approach. Whereas a larger piece of porcelain may prove tricky to fit, a smaller version may lend itself to awkward, cramped angles.
A lot of factors come into play when choosing the size of a tile. The type of project. The size of the room. Cost. Personal taste.
